Taking the plunge

So, I did it. I went on and bought the Nikon D90. It’s fabulous. I’ll say it was my birthday present… and probably will have to count for Christmas too :-) Now I feel I can do an even better job with my photography. I did a photo shoot with a friend of mine yesterday and the photos were crisp and beautiful. There are still a few other things I should probably get, such as a diffuser. I made my own version of a diffuser by using an index card and propping it up at the top of the flash using a rubber band. Ha! It worked pretty good. I had great lighting with that and shooting on a cloudy day. I think that makes a big difference when combating those pesky shadows. I’ve been taking an advanced studio photography class and I’m learning about shooting in a studio and all of the capabilities with different lighting. There is just so much to discover. We came up with some pretty cool shots. Maybe one day I’ll get more serious and have a studio, but I love shooting outdoors. I love natural light, but it can be tricky. Shooting in the early morning or late afternoon works best.  A few more jobs are coming my way shooting products such as t-shirts. I’ll keep you posted on how those go.

Photography Equipment

I’m so excited to be expanding my capabilities with new lenses and other items. I shoot with a Nikon D50 and it’s wonderful. I just purchased another flash - the SB600 which will help a lot. The Nikon’s flash is okay, but to do more magazine work etc. I needed a better flash. Now, I hope to purchase another lens. I currently have a standard lens - AF Nikkor 28-80mm f/3.3-5.6 and an AF Nikkor 70-300mm f/1.4-5.6. It’s nice having those, but I am hoping to purchase a wider-angle lens… maybe the AF-S DX Nikkor 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6. It features Nikon’s VR (vibration reduction) image stabilization and will be great for portraits and action. A friend of mine suggested a lens with f/2.8 but right now they are just way to expensive. I am so excited to continue to improve my photography skills. If you’d like to share any tips, that would be great. Maybe one day I’ll be able to afford the D300!
