Vacations and Photography

Monday, June 29th, 2009

I’m going to be leaving for Florida Thursday to spend two weeks in the Sunshine State! My husband’s family has rented a house on Anna Maria Island and then I’ll spend the second week in Melbourne with my folks. I plan to bring my Nikon to capture pictures of the family and to get pictures of the beach etc. However, I struggle sometimes when I’m on vacation when it comes to shooting pictures. As you can probably tell I love photography, but I often just want to sit back, relax and not necessarily take photos.  I seem to have my camera with me everyday for magazine shoots, modeling shoots etc. and sometimes it’s nice to just set it aside for awhile. Now, when I go on a vacation that is a once in a lifetime trip, I take tons of pictures. For example, I went to Ireland in 2006 and took 1,000 pictures! But heading to the beach isn’t really anything new. There are times that I have left the camera at home and come across something that would have been a great photo. I’m always looking for the next great shot. I do want to bring it with me  next week to get some pictures of the family. Both my sisters-in-law now have babies, so taking pictures of them is important. I can always hand the camera over to my husband :)

Weddings

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

I just attended a family member’s wedding in Tennessee and watched the photographer to see what she was focusing on. I remember shooting a wedding for a friend of my mothers when I was in high school or college. It was outside, so it was easier to shoot. It was in the evening and the lighting was perfect. That is the only one that I have done professionally. Of course I take photos when I attend a wedding just for fun. I want to learn more about wedding photography, so I can maybe shoot a few of them for friends or family. Although it does make me a bit nervous because it’s such a special day. I met a woman at a recent photography class that I attended and se offered to let me shadow her. That would be great practice! My husband’s cousin was the one who just got married and it was also outside. They also did something really cute for a photo. The bride, groom, bridesmaids and groomsmen got in their Jeep and they took pictures in that. It was a beautiful setting in a quiet country area in Gallatin, TN.

Nikon D90 problems

Friday, June 5th, 2009

My Nikon D90 broke after two months of using it! However, this blog is not here to badmouth Nikon or their products. They did get it back to me within one week and now it works great. I was shooting some photos of the outside of a church in Fountain Inn and for some reason the photos kept coming up very dark. The camera would shoot beautifully indoors, but outside you could barely make out the building in the photo. I was so frustrated and thought for sure I just have some settings wrong. I thought the aperature or shutter speed was somehow off, but I tried everything and it still wasn’t shooting properly. I kept receiving an Error message. Apparently, this is a common problem according to some searching on the Internet. I was very unhappy. A camera that expensive shouldn’t have problems! I also had to miss out on some photo shoots because of it. When I contacted Nikon, they had me go through a list of troubleshooting and none of those options worked. I had to mail it back. The information on the slip returned to me with the camera didn’t explain exactly what the problem was but it may have been the firmware. If you ever have a problem with your D90 or any other camera, I would suggest calling them once you receive a confirmation that they have the camera in their hands and requesting a “rush order.” I was impressed with their service and like I said, I got the camera back within a week. Nikon still makes a great product.
